It was an elegant town of the roman empire situated in a narrow land stripe between the Volcano and the sea. Unlike Pompeii, that in 79 A.C. was covered by ashes and pumice stones, Herculaneum was submerged by a avalanche of very hot mud that solidified and became an effective seal.
The excavation started in 1750 and are still going and have shown a rich town with luxurious houses, frescos and mosaics. Really interesting. The only pity is that the archaeological site rise in the center of unattractive residential area.
